'Twas a beautiful evening when Libbi's invitees descended on Lesley McKay's Bookshop in Queen's Court, Woollahra.
Whilst sipping a glass of champers (delish), I listened to Libbi's publisher, her young son ("It's not a bad book, you know. But it needs more pictures.") and Libbi's partner all give a little intro to the book before Libbi (radio & television host, MC, debator, writer, voice artist, the list goes on...) took to the microphone. As always, Libbi was entertaining and frank, pointing out that no one was more surprised than she was to find the words, 'mummy', 'manners' and 'Libbi' in the same sentence. ;)
Then it was up to The Drum regular and political writer, Annabel Crabb, to officially launch Libbi's new book - appropriately doing so on Libbi's birthday.
What a celebration!
I had a quick chat to Libbi as she kindly signed my copy, and did what mothers do a lot of the time: juggle both her son on her lap and our chat, in which she described the book as being a way to connect mums.
The A to Z of Mummy Manners is an etiquette guide for dealing with other kid's mums as well as a bunch of other Mummy dilemmas, in an informative and humorous way. (Would you expect anything less from Libbi?) Apparently, Libbi wrote it mostly during the night between the hours of 3am and 4am - you know, as you do - whilst getting up to her young daughter at the time.
The first thing I noticed about the book is the awesome cover. It has that oldy-worldy feel that you would expect from an etiquette book from the 40s. However, look more closely, and you'll find the illustrations far more entertaining than you'd see on any book from sixty years ago. ;)
As the name suggests, the book is an alphabetized list of subjects that you may come across in your dealings with other mums. Here's the back cover which gives you a great idea of what you can expect inside:
And here's a clip of Libbi being interviewed on Channel 7's The Morning Show where she explains the book even further:
If you want to know if it's ok to nick someone else's Nanny; whether you need to keep up with the Joneses when organising your child's birthday party; or simply how not to, as Libbi says, "piss off" other Mummies around you, Libbi's book will be right up your alley. (I think it'd make a great gift, too. Especially for new parents.)
Entertaining stuff - I love it.
Now, Libbi has offered three copies of her new book to give away to Mummy Mayhem readers*! All you have to do is leave a comment below by Thursday next week (14 April), and I'll draw out the winners Friday morning and announce them in my noticeboard above, as well as in my weekly wrap up I do each Friday.
