Book Review & GIVEAWAY: The A to Z of Mummy Manners by Libbi Gorr

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending Libbi Gorr's book launch for her new book, The A to Z of Mummy Manners.

'Twas a beautiful evening when Libbi's invitees descended on Lesley McKay's Bookshop in Queen's Court, Woollahra.

Whilst sipping a glass of champers (delish), I listened to Libbi's publisher, her young son ("It's not a bad book, you know. But it needs more pictures.") and Libbi's partner all give a little intro to the book before Libbi (radio & television host, MC, debator, writer, voice artist, the list goes on...) took to the microphone. As always, Libbi was entertaining and frank, pointing out that no one was more surprised than she was to find the words, 'mummy', 'manners' and 'Libbi' in the same sentence. ;)

Then it was up to The Drum regular and political writer, Annabel Crabb, to officially launch Libbi's new book - appropriately doing so on Libbi's birthday.

What a celebration!

I had a quick chat to Libbi as she kindly signed my copy, and did what mothers do a lot of the time: juggle both her son on her lap and our chat, in which she described the book as being a way to connect mums.

The A to Z of Mummy Manners is an etiquette guide for dealing with other kid's mums as well as a bunch of other Mummy dilemmas, in an informative and humorous way. (Would you expect anything less from Libbi?) Apparently, Libbi wrote it mostly during the night between the hours of 3am and 4am - you know, as you do - whilst getting up to her young daughter at the time.

The first thing I noticed about the book is the awesome cover. It has that oldy-worldy feel that you would expect from an etiquette book from the 40s. However, look more closely, and you'll find the illustrations far more entertaining than you'd see on any book from sixty years ago. ;)

As the name suggests, the book is an alphabetized list of subjects that you may come across in your dealings with other mums. Here's the back cover which gives you a great idea of what you can expect inside:

And here's a clip of Libbi being interviewed on Channel 7's The Morning Show where she explains the book even further:

If you want to know if it's ok to nick someone else's Nanny; whether you need to keep up with the Joneses when organising your child's birthday party; or simply how not to, as Libbi says, "piss off" other Mummies around you, Libbi's book will be right up your alley. (I think it'd make a great gift, too. Especially for new parents.)

Entertaining stuff - I love it.

Now, Libbi has offered three copies of her new book to give away to Mummy Mayhem readers*! All you have to do is leave a comment below by Thursday next week (14 April), and I'll draw out the winners Friday morning and announce them in my noticeboard above, as well as in my weekly wrap up I do each Friday.

The A to Z of Mummy Manners is out now.

Publisher: Harper Collins
RRP: $29.99

*The giveaway is open to Aussie residents. Ta!

I've always loved Libbi, she's hilarious! I have no doubt her book would be no different.

I'd love to win a copy, if only to learn all the things I've been doing wrong over the years!

*squeamishly puts hand in the air* I just might have had the same reaction to someone attempting to give my daughter chocolate. In my defence, she does have an allergy to dairy...
Love her advice about the loud voice when other children are misbehaving!
Would love to win this book (read it myself) and give it to my girlfriend who is due in 5 weeks! We're already at logger heads as she keeps telling me how I SHOULD be raising my daughter... can't wait till she is a mummy! *chuckles quietly to herself*

Well, I would leave a comment, but after just filling 20 book boxes to move, and still not being finished... then again, what's one more book hey?

This would give me something else to read since I no longer have Dance of Revenge, and I am sick of reading all my novels over & over again! Count me in. Hehe :)

Please don't enter me in the draw, as I don't need this book, but it sounds like a funny read, so I'll check it out of the library.

Sounds great! Would love a copy. Not sure about my Mummy Manners ... might be a little dusty ... could probably use a refresh. But when you've got a headache, your stomach is screaming for food, there is paint in the carpet, a basket full of odd socks on the lounge and kids playing cowboys and Indians ON your dining table, I think Mummy Manners go out the freakin window. Don't they?

Would love a copy, especially if I can quote it in playgrounds, restaurants, swimming lessons...whenever the need arises! And, of course, avoid anyone ever waving the book at me!

Hi Jodie,
I too enjoy the humour & words from Libbi Gorr.
Whilst I've been thru the Mummy thing long ago.. Am now a very interested person who sees a much changed world of parenting .. indeed.. Manners are making a comeback.?
Good idea.. Any chance I have to be in for a win would be much appreciated .. And give me a heads-up before I listen to Libbi speak during Sydney Writers Festival in May.
Her talk is free (free!!) at North Ryde Community Centre.
Dont think there'll be champers :-(

This is very generous of you. As I am far from being a mum, please do not enter me in the draw, but I am interested in how you came to be invited to the book launch. Are you a friend of the author?
